Beautiful artwork for the story. Again, I love the expressions you chose. And I like the red banner across the bottom on this one.

I wanted to show Joyce - a woman finding love again and being happy and I liked this image of Angel where he looks a lot more mature than he did in season one. Gabrielle's story is such an alternative vision it's one of the reasons that I wanted to focus on Joyce and Angel only.

thank you for checking out the work and your feed back - always means so much to me.

I was lucky to come across just the right awesome drawing by a master that was a very good suggestion of Joyce.

I really like how you incorporated the drawing in this one.

Thanks DD - I was going for Angel thinking back about their time together and how he saw Joyce.

This one is my favorite of the three versions, very well done!

I was curious why the protagonist (Buffy) doesn't show up in any of the artwork, and what the thought process was behind the composition. The coloring of the banner is very elegant btw, very Old Masters.

Thank you for your feed back -

Regarding which characters to use - this is such an usual treatment of Angel and Sunndale events that I wanted to focus on that difference and not on the easier and normal, IMO, angst of the Buffy-Angel relationship. I wanted to focus on that difference which is Angel and Joyce. The timeline element was also a big factor - Angel and Buffy did not go through the full experiences of their relationship in Sunnydale and that made a difference for me.

Buffy in the story is also treated with a wonderful dignity and maturity with her decision to respect her mother's secret relationship which was another important point that influenced my choice to feature only Angel and Joyce. The story for me was about Joyce and her life and duty as a parent and her love and responsibility to her daughter - even if she loves Angel, her first duty is to Buffy.

One of the thing I loved about this story is how Joyce on a one to one scale makes the same difficult choice that Buffy had to make on the save the world scale with sending her love for Angel into the Acathla vortex. Mother and daughter both had the strength of character to do what was right and demanded of them.

Another factor with my process for creating the visuals is that my natural tendency is to favor more simple and focused graphic style - I don't care to use a lot of elements that could possibly make for a more "busy look" Nothing wrong with visuals that include many elements - it's just not they way I like to work.

Using that classical nude Boucher drawing - I wanted to respect the drawing of this great artist and to try and have the characters of Angel and Joyce reflect the elegance of the drawing also the reason for my using the sepia tones.

THANK YOU for that explanation of your thought process! I really enjoy it when artists are also able to articulate their work verbally (although I know that common wisdom is "the work should speak for itself!" But I think conversing deeper adds interest.)

Is the Boucher drawing meant to be reflective of the sort of drawing Angel might have done, and his history as an 18th century european? (as opposed to the "developing world artists" who Joyce represented?) I do love that sort of "chiaroscuro" and sepia tones that you employed in these, and the red tone you chose was just the perfect amount of color and perfect tone.

Yes - the drawing was intended to depict something that Angel would have done of Joyce. I loved that section of the story where the drawing is described as being done by someone who had an intimate connection with the subject - just those few words and you knew that Angel had a deep connection and understanding of Joyce and the things that were important to her.
